Proposal to Rename Mountain for G.I. Runs Afoul of Politics
A proposal to rename a Phoenix mountain after an American Indian killed in Iraq has led to a nasty fight between the Democratic governor and some Republican lawmakers.
Gov. Janet Napolitano says she wants to honor Pfc. Lori Piestewa of the Army, a Hopi from northeastern Arizona who was the first military servicewoman to die in the war. The plan would also settle complaints about the mountain's current name, Squaw Peak, which many Indians find offensive.
Governor Napolitano has run into opposition from the board that oversees official state names and criticism from conservative lawmakers who say she is using Private Piestewa's death as political leverage.
"I think it sets the tone for what her governorship is going to be like," said State Representative John Allen, a Republican. "It's going to be a very Clintonesque style in the sense where you take advantage, no matter whose grief it is."
Now tell me, WHAT THE HELL DOES CLINTON HAVE TO DO WITH THIS ISSUE? I swear, if Clinton is the BEST the republicans have to throw at us, we must be doing something right. IT'S BEEN FOUR YEARS, GET OVER IT! And to use Clinton as an excuse not to do something, pathetic. Simply pathetic.
