UK forces 'face malaria outbreak'

It is the latest in a series of problems with the supply chain from Britain, which have led to reported shortages of toilet roll, rations and water.

But the lack of nets poses the gravest potential risk - British forces are massed around Basra, a region where mosquitoes are known to carry malaria.

Encampments at one base near Basra were said to resemble marshes, where soldiers at vehicle checkpoints were forced to keep walking, even when eating, in a bid to avoid the insects.
